Admission requirements

Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE requires from international students:

Academic requirements

Certificate courses usually require a minimum of Year 10 in Australia or the international equivalent.

Diploma courses usually require a minimum of Year 12 in Australia or the international equivalent.

Mature age entry (over the age of 21) with relevant work experience is usually accepted as an alternative to Year 10 or 12 levels of education.

International education achievement levels have a Year 10 and 12 equivalent in Queensland, Australia. Visit TAFE Queensland's Academic/education requirements page to learn about them.

English language requirements

Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE requires evidence of proficiency in the English language, where English is not the student's first language.


For most applicants it will be necessary to obtain IELTS test results as a condition of enrolment.

Accepted levels for Country Assessment Level 3 & 4

IELTS is the only accepted test for Country Assessment Levels 3 and 4. IELTS test results are regarded as valid for two years only.

Please note

  1. Intending students should seek advice from the Australian Embassy or Consulate in their home country regarding specific Country Assessment Level (CAL) requirements for obtaining a Student Study Visa.
  2. Students intending to study ELICOS are encouraged to take IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge so that a more accurate assessment of the length of time needed for English tuition can be made.
  3. All ELICOS students, including those in TAFE, MUST sit for a recognised international language test (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or ISLPR) to gain entry to a formal course. Potential students must gain advice from the relevant country embassy in regards to specific Country Assessment Level (CAL) requirements.
  4. TAFE Queensland will accept ISLPR results from approved TAFE Queensland test centres or Griffith University or QUT only. ISLPR results, from any other test centre, will not be accepted for entry to TAFE Queensland courses.
  5. Original documentary evidence or signed original certified copies must be provided.
  6. Other evidence of English language ability may be accepted.
  7. TAFE Queensland reserves the right to accept or deny entry.
