About the 2012 SQIT (Toowoomba Campus) Graduation

Students who have completed Advanced Diploma, Diploma or Certificate IV courses during the 2012 calendar year will, after completing all necessary course requirements, be eligible for graduation at the Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE, Toowoomba Campus.

The graduation will take place at the Hume Ridge Church of Christ, 461 Hume Street, Toowoomba on Saturday 2 March, 2013. The official ceremony commences at 2pm and is scheduled to conclude at 4.30pm (Note: completion time is approximate and will depend on the number of students graduating). As the graduation ceremony is an official function and a very important event for the graduating students, we ask that all graduates and guests remain seated for the duration of the ceremony.

SQIT will arrange for the hire of the official academic dress on behalf of the students. Please see the attached graduation response form (PDF, 556KB) for the information required from you. This must be returned by the specified date accompanied by full payment. No late orders can be processed as we need to give at least 14 days' notice to the hiring organisation.

SQIT has also arranged professional photographers to be present on the day for official portraits. Please see the photography information section for information and prices.

To enable sufficient time for gowning and photography, we ask that this schedule be followed for arrival times:

Time Faculty/Students
12.15pm Hospitality, Community Service
12.30pm Child Studies, Education Support, Hair and Beauty
12.40pm Information Technology, Art, Photography, Multi-media
12.50pm Nursing
1.10pm Business, Accounting, Horticulture, Workplace Training and Assessing, Building and Engineering, all other students

Please wear your semi-formal attire when you arrive (it can get quite hot when you are fully gowned so you may wish to take this into account when choosing an outfit!). You will then be assisted into your gown. Please remember gowns are not to be taken from the grounds of Hume Ridge.

How will I know if I am eligible to graduate?

As well as feedback supplied by your teacher and progressive reporting from throughout the semester, each student is issued with Results of Assessment after the completion of each module of study. Please check these documents carefully and if you think an error has occurred, speak with your teacher urgently. If your results do not indicate you have completed all the necessary study, you should make arrangements with your teacher to complete all the required work to be eligible for graduation. Keep in mind, teaching staff may not be available during the Christmas period.

The graduation ceremony

Graduation is as much a celebration of your attainment as it is an opportunity for family, friends and SQIT colleagues to congratulate you on your achievement. The ceremony will feature guest speakers and award presentations. Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be provided.

The ceremony is a special event for most students as it is the last time to be together with fellow students at an official college activity. Many student groups also link the graduation with a more informal celebration after the event.

At approximately 1.40pm you will be required to line up (in Academic Procession order) in the foyer of Hume Ridge. Please be in this area at this time and follow directions from SQIT staff. The academic procession of dignitaries and graduands will then proceed into the auditorium. You will be allocated a seat and called to the stage to receive a replica of your certificate/diploma etc. The original of the document will have already been posted to you.

Publicity photographs may be taken at the ceremony. Please ensure you have signed the necessary Release Authorisation to enable us to use any photographs that have been taken of you in future promotion of SQIT.

What academic dress am I required to wear?

Academic dress examples

Students graduating from advanced diploma or diploma courses will be required to wear the full academic dress. This consists of a black gown, a coloured hood (colour depends on the faculty you are graduating from) and a mortar board (hat/head dress). Certificate IV graduating students are only required to wear the gown. Please ensure you indicate the correct details on the graduation response form (PDF, 556KB). We order the official attire from the information you supply on the form, so it is not possible to "swap" sizes on the day. Instructions to enable you to select the correct sizes are included on the form.

Professional Photography Information

The 2012 Graduation will be covered photographically by Owen Studio. Photographers will be available from 12.15pm until 1.30pm only. They are not available after the ceremony, so it is important you get any necessary photographs as soon as possible after you are gowned. Individual and family groups can be taken, so ensure you have organised all your guests to be available at your nominated gowning time.

Owen Studio can offer a variety of benefits to both the student and family/friends etc. Images taken on the day can be viewed on the Internet and ordered from the website within 48 hours of the ceremony. Alternatively, the studio in Toowoomba is open from 9am to 5pm weekdays and from 9am to 12pm on Saturdays.

All Owen Studio images are viewed as proofs so parents and students can order the sizes and quantities they want. Turnaround time is generally two (2) weeks and orders can be posted or collected from the studio in Ruthven Street, Toowoomba.

Payment for the photographs must be made to Owen Studio directly when ordering. SQIT can not assist in the ordering or payment for any photographs you choose.
