SQIT students - The darlings at Regional Queensland Training Awards
Tuesday, 7 August 2012
Three of seven Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE (SQIT) student finalists walked away as winners from the Queensland Training Awards Darling Downs South West Regional Final on Saturday July 28.
Students Lauren Janson-Roberts (Hairdressing), Robert Geebung (Horticulture), and Dallas Robinson (nee Twaddle [Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Healthcare]) won the Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Student of the Year awards respectively.
The three award winners will now go on to compete in the QTA State Final on September 14.
SQIT was heavily represented at the awards evening with the seven finalists also joined by SQIT Nursing teacher Mark Wager who was nominated as VET Teacher or Trainer of the Year.
Institute Director Trevor Schwenke said SQIT was already proud of its eight finalists and to walk away with three wins has brought a definite buzz to the Institute.
"We know our SQIT students and teachers are exceptional and to have this recognised at a regional level, and continuing on to a state level, is a wonderful acknowledgment and a pat on the back they all deserve," Mr Schwenke said.
Lauren Janson-Roberts, a past SQIT hairdressing student and a current WorldSkills finalist said she was delighted with her award and is looking forward to the QTA State Final.
"I'm very thankful to have done my training at SQIT - it has helped advance my career and to compete in WorldSkills," Ms Janson-Roberts said.
SQIT's student regional finalists also included Lindsey Collier (Photo Imaging), Tracy Tully (Hairdressing), Lauren Cockburn (Carpentry) and Alfred Orcher (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Healthcare).
Another SQIT student Des Cowburn (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Healthcare) will compete in the Central Queensland Regional Finals on August 4.
SQIT had a definite presence at the event with some of its hospitality and events students assisting with the catering.
