Workshop uses music to develop children's skills

Monday, 5 October 2009

Workshop uses music to develop children's skills Children in the South Burnett area are set to benefit from a recent workshop for teachers focussing on the role of music in early childhood. The program at Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE's Kingaroy campus was run over two sessions and was based on the techniques developed by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. Early childhood teachers attending the sessions were encouraged by visiting teacher Claire Nicholls to participate as children and view the teachings through children's eyes to get a full appreciation of the importance of music to children. Early childhood education teacher at SQIT's Kingaroy campus Bernadette Upton said all participants should now be able to develop music plans and implement them with children in their care. "Music supports gross and fine motor skill development and valuable social skills as well as being highly enjoyable for the children,'' Ms Upton said. The 23 attendees were from different early education providers across the South Burnett. Ms Upton said they enjoyed the opportunity to receive their accredited training in a stimulating environment. Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE currently delivers a range of accredited training in early childhood at the Kingaroy campus. For further information on the variety of courses available contact the Kingaroy Campus on (07) 4160 4400.
